0 What Will My Nursing Home Cost?

Whether you or your relative is entering into a care home one important thing is to think about costs. Costs can vary dramatically from one residence to the other, and it also depends on the level of care you require.

The four types of nursing home are:

Nursing homes; nursing homes are facilitated so that residents can have personal and medical care combined. These types of establishments have their own nurses which are on hand 24/7 for residents. This means the price can be a bit more expensive. For someone whose primary care is a health one, costs can be funded by the NHS, which is known as Continuing Care. This means that even if you have paid for your own care in the past, you could be due a refund if your needs are such.

Residential homes; these types of homes aren't as expensive because less medical care is required. Of course, medical care is still on hand but the main priority is personal care rather than medical. Depending on your Primary Care Trust and your care home, costs differ from person to person. You should contact the individual residential home for more detail.

Dementia care homes; when your relative has dementia their need is a very specialised one. These types of homes care for people with the mental disability rather than physical needs, although physical needs are still taken care of. These care homes can be more expensive because some need specialised equipment in order to properly care for the person with dementia. Patients also need to be monitored at all times so they don't hurt themselves or others. This, of course, costs more money. In the UK this could cost £25,000 a year but the nature of the person's conditions could mean that continuing care costs may be covered by the NHS themselves.

One family with an elderly relative in a care home commented, "It is vital you do your research over which care home to use. After all, this will be their home and they should feel comfortable in it. You should visit care homes across the country but choosing one near you allows you the time to visit on the weekends or whenever you're free. Costs can be a touchy subject, but proper financial planning and informative discussions with care duty managers allows you to make the right decision and make the right provisions too."

Have you been refused free NHS Continuing Care? You might be wrongly paying care fees and can now recover care fees that have been wrongly paid and avoid paying for care from now on.
